Dodge Durango has been around for a mere five years, but it seems so long. The SUV world has moved so fast. In those short five years the Durango has gone from innovative to date by its competition. But it has established enduring strengths and character; it's truly rugged and sporty, with distinctive styling that reflects those values. It is NOT built from the Dakota compact pickup truck, and that's the biggest part of this big SUV story from Dodge. The old Durango was that it wasn't very spacious, and the space that was there was compromised in some ways. That's all changed now. This Durango is the best thing to come out of Dodge Truck since the Ram pickup ten years ago, and the best Dodge SUV in the long and storied history of the division, bar none.
2004 Dodge Durango bows that is larger and more conservative than its predecessor. It features 3 rows of seating and a choice of V6 or V8 power. Most notable, the Durango is offered with the 5.7L, 335-hp Hemi V8. It's seven inches longer, and the wheelbase, width and height have all grown by three inches, bringing it to a size between the Chevy Tahoe and Ford Expedition. Its skin has been completely restyled. It offers excellent ride and handling, without that unrefined, rough round the edges feel that characterized the previous-generation model. Both the 4.7-liter and 5.7-liter V8s are superb, smooth and powerful. They come with a five-speed automatic that's smooth, refined, smart and responsive. Inside, it's quiet, roomy, comfortable and technologically sophisticated.
Compare this Durango with the new 2004 Trailblazer.

2004 Trailblazer |
The sole power train for both LS and LT Chevrolet TrailBlazer models is a 4.2-liter inline Vortec 6-cylinder engine. Mated to a standard 4-speed automatic transmission, it can produce 275 horsepower at 6000 rpm and 275 lb-ft of torque at 3600 rpm. There is nothing surprising about the fact that 2004 Chevrolet TrailBlazer can be fitted with both two-wheel drive configurations and four-wheel drive configurations. What may be surprising is the SUV's handling ability, which is in part due to its hydraulically assisted power rack-and-pinion steering.
